The Print Media Fails?

by Norzarina Norhidullah

You know what is print media?

In short, the print media is the media other than electronic media and digital media, the aim is to convey information to the audience. Submission of information in print media is through printing. Examples of print media are newspapers, books, magazines, flyers, brochures and many others.

Example of print media : newspaper

In fact, the print media in this period seems to have failed to penetrate the interests and needs of readers. As if these media types, was outdated.

According to one of my English in Media lecturers, Mr Anthony Lee, he said, the decline of print media is caused by the digital media fame. Example online news, blog, Youtube, social website, and etc.

Example of media digital : Online news

He said again, the number of readers and buyers of print media is increasingly reduced due to the increase and development of technology in the field of information delivery.

64.7% of Malaysian use the internets equal to 16,900,000 users.

However, if viewed from another angle, the development of technology actually provides significant convenience to the public, especially in the process of gathering information.

But, if we think about it more depth, apart from the development of digital media, is it exist other factors that lead to failure of the print media?

Others than development of media digital.

You know we can’t put the blame only at the media digital? So, what is your opinion?

  1. Hi Norzarina. In my opinion, the content of the print media like newspaper itself lead to the failure of the print media. I don't want to be bias, but i think some of the news are not creative enough to attract people attention. Majority of the people feel that most of the press company already become a government tools. Obviously, we can't see the different of the news angle between the press company. Do you agree with me?

    1. I agree with you Nur. I was thinkinh about that too. The news itself is a problem why young people doesnt want to read it. Not being creative is a one of the factors. Who want to read boring story? Am i right?

  3. Hi Enna,

This issue approximately with my final year project. Based on my study so far, there are so many reason why printed is still king of the media and it also so many reason why on line media can replace conventional media in future. I encourage you to search it because really interesting to know. For me, I still prefer to use conventional media because I really enjoy when reading printed book compare to on line book

  5. Of course, we can’t solely the blame on digital media. As for me, I’m not really a fan of the print media. Why? Mainly because print media in the nation is lacking transparency and that is one truth that we cannot deny. Certain news is fabricated to serve the government’s political propaganda. But mostly, news via digital media is almost instantaneous with just a click of a button, unlike print media that tend to take more time to publish news. Which is why, most of us prefer online news and we put our trust on digital media than the print media. Indeed not all news from the internet is true as anyone is qualified to be a “journalist” these days. And there are some who prefers to read news the conventional way from newspapers, for instance. As for me, I always make sure I check out the truth, or rather verify the accuracy of a particular news from more than one type of news sources.

  6. Save the trees. Print less papers. Spread the news. Use the Internet. It is more convenient and interactive for readers (consumers) to read with digital media. We could get hold of the news once we are connected (to the Internet) via our tablet or phone, without the concern of recycling the papers. Also, pictures appear in better quality. From the journalists' perspectives, news may be updated easily and arranged neatly according to categories and lengths using digital media. We live in the digital era now. So, no matter how much I like the touch of a physical newspaper, we have to go with the flow.

  7. Print media did not fail. Old people still prefer hand holding the newspaper to read. But for me, I prefer the online media is just because online media has not much censorship compare to print media. It much more freedom for a journalist to deliver the truth news.

  8. Actually there is no one's fault that the traditional media is becoming les favourite to people. It is human's nature to do everything in an easier way hence technology came to replace traditional media so that human won't be having trouble carrying newspaper all the timw while waiting for bus. I think digital media help readers a lot in terms of ways of gaining news.

    1. Yes! Nowadays, I myself use the BBC mobile app to read the news. Accessible anywhere via my phone without the hassle of bringing additional newspapers.

  9. As day passes, the technology makes our life easier. This applied to the digital media. Peoples nowadays prefer something easier and faster like the digital media. So they can even read it at anywhere and anytime which I would prefer too. However, for the veteran peoples like Yee Man said they still prefer to read the tabloid or printed newspaper. For example, our own lecturer, Dr. Jeniri Amir. He did say that he will read multiple printed newspaper without fail. That is maybe because that is what he practices since long ago. So, it really depends on us either want to read the printed newspaper or the digital media.
