Analysis on Digital Behavior Questionnaires: Is technology a part of you?

By Nor Atikah Nasir

After we posted our questionnaires to our respondents on Facebook, we have received around 75 responses from them. All in all, our questionnaires focused on the importance of having the mobile/smartphones. before that, here is the link for our questionnaires.

Firstly, our analysis, it is safe to say that since they are at teenage age (13-17 years old), they already own their own mobile phone probably sponsored by their parents. The second highest age which they had their mobile/smartphones is &-12 years old. So, is it those ages are really suitable to have mobile phones? According to Dr. Pamela Rutledge, if the child is very active in team sports and there are a lot of logistics or emergencies, that is a very good reason to have a smartphone. In addition, the educational possibilities a smartphone presents should also play a role in any parent’s decision-making process. Rutledge added by saying that there is also evidence that technology can provide very effective learning experiences, especially when children don’t have other types of positive cognitive and emotional stimulation. plus, the smartphone also able to secure the safety of their children.

Secondly, we did ask about which type of brand that they admire most. The highest answer that we got is Apple products and most of them said that because of its quality and affordable. Hurmm... seems like many parents nowadays are quite rich to afford their children with Iphone or Ipad. :) On the other hands, many peoples agree that Apple products are just keeps getting better. Every new product they offer creates a stir that no other electronic brand has been able to compete with. They not only meet the demand but they also exceed expectations.

Next, we can see the pattern that the mobile/smartphone is very important to them because it is convenient for them to contact others and be contacted. They also said the smartphones make their life easier to go online. However, what if they do not have any smartphones in this era of technology? Of course they will feel indifferent and anxious to get it.

Most of the people nowadays like to take a selfie. However, when we asked how many selfie do you take in a day and most respondents answered none. Its quite doubtful because they said that they reveal their true self in the social media. Yeah, it might be revealing without showing their pictures, right? Who knows.
What we can say is the smartphones really help to boost up their confidence level on their appearances when they are taking a selfie and post it on the SNS.

Furthermore, do you consider yourself as a social media addicts? Some of them said Yes and some of them said No. Dr. Wilson said that addiction usually refers to compulsive behavior that leads to negative effects. In most addictions, people feel compelled to do certain activities so often that they become a harmful habit, which then interferes with other important activities such as work or school. In this context, a social networking addict could be considered someone with a compulsion to use social media to excess--constantly checking Facebook status updates or "stalking" people's profiles on Facebook, for example, for hours on end. However, what are the signs for the social media addiction?

  1. Spending more than one hour daily at social media sites.  Some would say one should not spend more than half an hour daily.
  2. Checking Facebook whenever possible. Some people leave the program open and switch back and forth to it while working, for example.  Others use a phone App to check it while eating lunch with friends, for example.  This is extremely rude, but one observes it a lot.
  3. Over-sharing.  In an age when many people are very concerned about their privacy, some people are sharing very private information or photos with their Facebook friends or on other sites.  A possible reason for this is to gain approval or acknowledgment from peers.  This is sometimes called the need for social affirmation.
  4. Hearing from friends and family that you are spending too much time on the social networking sites.
  5.  Interference with work, school performance or your offline social life.
The International Business Times (UK) reported on research from Tel Aviv University in Israel.  Researchers found that social networking sites like Facebook can have a great deal of negative influence on the user's mental health (http://drlwilson.com/ARTICLES/ADDICTION,%20SOCIAL%20M.html).Therefore, the one who said they are the social media addict might need to change their attitude after this. :)

Last but not least,  can anybody live without mobile/smartphone in this modernization world? We do not think so. This is because mobile/smartphones has become one of our need in order to survive in this life. Just imagine, if you are trap in dangerous place, how you want to ask for help if not using the smartphones?
In a nutshell, we think that we have achieved our goal for this research whereas most peoples agreed that the mobile/smartphones is very important in their life even thought some peoples did said that they can live without it.

*Nomophobia is the fear of being out of mobile phone contact. The term, an abbreviation for "no-mobile-phone phobia", was coined during a 2010 study by the UK Post Office who commissioned YouGov, a UK-based research organization to look at anxieties suffered by mobile phone users.

  2. As for me, its not that people cannot live without their smartphone, but it is because people cannot live without being connected to people. If we are the only one that give up of using mobile phone, it is not possible. But imagine if the whole world gives up using mobile phone? We will be able to. This is because, mobile phone brings more connection around the world. We need to stay connected especially in today's advancement of technology world or we will be left behind.

  3. I personally feel like I am living in a cave without my phone. There are no quick updates, no connectivity with people whom are more than 200 metres away from me, no convenience. I admit, I have mild nomophobia. Nevertheless, I know I can still live without my phone. It is not like air, water or shelter. I can survive without it but I just won't be adequate.

    1. I'm agree with Qiu Xi. After having a smartphone, I do think that I have become a nomophobia. I would to post pictures and update status on my Facebook, or Wechat. But in the end, I think I can barely survive my life too without my smartphones. It just that I will feel something is missing and incomplete.

  4. I agree to Wanie’s comment. Mobile phone has become a trend that connects people. People need interaction among one another to survive in the world, instead of technology. In my opinion, technology is just a tool for people to interact and build network. Therefore, technology becomes a part of our life now.

  5. For me, i can live without phone but i'm scared that my life will not be great like before :). In my opinion, phone already become the basic needs for everyone because people use it to interact and enhance our relationships. Moreover, I don't think that people can still rely just on letter or email :)

    1. Yes, its true Nur that we can still rely on the letter or email. But email is easier to send with our smartphones. Even when we wants to apply for our internship, we need to call the company first. If we do not have the phones, how are we gonna call them? That is why phones is very important in our life. :)

  6. Admittedly, I am a self-diagnosed nomophobic. I can’t answer if everyone can live without their phone. But as for me, I really can’t live without my phone. I did try going handphone-free for almost three days, that was when I sent my phone repair just last month. During the period, I realized I was suffering from somewhat “mobile phone withdrawal”; basically I was restless the whole time. All I could think about was my mobile phone. I was anxiously counting days to be reunited with my phone. It sucked because I realized how much dependent or rather addicted I was to my phone. On the bright side, I also realized that a lot more other things like talking to my friends face-to-face without having to look at my screen, and also sleeping much earlier without my phone. But of course, when I got back my phone, everything is back to square one. True enough, I’m a nomophobic.

  7. Irrefutable, I also have nomophobia problem. This problem starts since I further my study. One of the reason is, I fear if something bad happen to me and I cannot contact someone. But, in circumstances which I feel safe and comfortable, I think I can live without phone. Nevertheless, my situation now requires me to stay with my phone to stay connect with others.
