Worshiping Internet than God?

Fernandez Thomas

“ We can blame the Internet for plenty: the proliferation of porn, our obsession with cat videos, the alleged rise of teen trends like - brace yourself - eyeball licking.
But is it also a culprit in helping us lose our religion? A new study suggests it might be." - Jessica Ravitz.

Nowadays, living in this sophisticated era, people are becoming more advance, competitive and struggle to live in the better place but, do you realize that people’s intellectual are affected with “this” advancement?.

Most of the people in this world are relying on the internet compare to their religion - Downey A. 2014. In America, studies says that most of the community who are advance in terms of economic, status, and knowledge compare to other people are more likely to "lose" their religion and becoming free thinker. This phenomena happened because they more into Logical Thinking.

Internet has a huge impact towards people's belief either it is direct or indirect way. Too much information can change people's thought and start questioning about their own religion.

" Is my religion is better than others? "

" Why my religion teach me to be like this? "

We know that religion are very subjective, Everyone has their own belief. before i end my sharing, i would like to ask a question.

Is The Internet Killing Religion?

  1. Interesting post, Fernandez! In my opinion, I really do agree with you that generally, most of our current generation are losing faith in religion, or rather suffering from shaky faith. However, to blame the Internet is an over-exaggeration and an unfair accusation. When it comes to faith, it is the individual's responsibility, to whether or not he/she wants to hold on to it. If you must say that the Internet is the culprit as to why our generation is turning into free-thinkers, I can assure you Fern, that as someone who recently gave up on her religion, the Internet connectivity has NOTHING to do with it. Ultimately, it all comes down to how one chooses to use the Internet.

So to answer your question, does the Internet truly kill religion?
NO, the Internet does not kill religion. RELIGION kills religion.
Because they think their religion is superior than the other. And there are historical events to prove it, e.g the French Wars, Crusades, etc. (now, ISIS?)

There are several reasons as to what causes a man to lose his faith - surroundings, upbringing, education, personal reasons, etc., AND the Internet is not one of them! Anyway it's not like it's a SIN to be a free-thinker (lol!). My point is, DON'T blame the Internet for the downfall of religion.

Again, this is purely my opinion. Thank you.

  2. In my opinion, internet does not kill religion. People kill their own religion. People is the one who have a choice to prefer to be free thinker or prefer to be in religion. If they want to be free thinker, why should internet being blame?

Internet cannot be blame for this issues.

    1. I agree with Norzarina,
Internet not kill religion, people kill their own religion. As rigid Internet users, we must know that goggle is not omniscient, google only knows that which it has been told by human. The true God knows everything, even that which we do not. Then google does not answer prayer, but will give you the answer you were looking for.

  3. I agree that the internet is not the reason for human to question their faith. However, I cannot deny the facts that internet can be one of the reason for human of doing so. In social media, there are a lot of unexplained phenomena that causes us to question our own religion, but it depends on people how they would take it. Its true, we are the ones who determine our own belief, but without studying our own bible or Al-quran, we started question the existence of god. Who is the one we should believe? The internet or our religion? As for me, its better to just read for the knowledge, but we will have the answer if we go back to the basic. Instead of reading the posts in social media, take a moment to read your religion book.

  4. I share Venisa's opinion - religion extremists are the ones trying to kill other religions. It is all right if free thinkers live on moral values, as long as they do not harm others. The internet actually gives us more access to quick information (though irresponsible people like to spread rumours to mislead readers). Internet does not kill religion. Even if you don't have a religion, take note......

"There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft... When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness." - Khaled Hosseini

  5. In my opinion, the internet does not kill religion. Conversely, internet is the one who helps religion. Why do I say so? It is because internet is a channel that provides chances for people to further understand their own belief and also interact with people of the same faith. With the advancement of technology, people are starting to use tablets or mobile phones to read their religion ‘guide book’. People can read their ‘guide book’ anytime, anywhere without bringing the heavy religion ‘guide book’. However, the content of the guide book depends on an individual’s belief. This convenience helps people to enhance their beliefs.

    1. I'm totally agree with Yee Man Chung. Internet cannot be blame for this issues as human itself trying to kill their own religion. It is very obvious that internet just only a tool that can be used for any purposes. People should use their mind and use the internet as a medium to increase their understanding o knowledge about the religion. Moreover, we can simply type and search about critical thinker or philosopher that can help us to seek the best explanation or arguments about religion.

  6. Hye Kevin, actually I'm agree with all of our members' comments. This is because Internet do not kill religion. However, it is undoubtedly make people care less about religion. Why do I say that? Nowadays, peoples own the smartphone with the fastest internet connection to connect with other peoples around the world. They will use the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and etc without even realizes how much time passes. That is the starting point when peoples forget to pray and spend more time to reflect themselves with their own God. Even though they go to the mosque, church and temples, the smartphone is always in their palm or pockets. It shows that peoples over-dependent onto the smartphone and Internet. Nevertheless, Internet does help peoples to understand more about their own religion. For example in Islam, many pious men or women (Ustaz or Ustazah) use the Internet to disseminate more information regarding Islam. They posted some encouraged words, advice and do'a based from Al-Quran. Lastly, spend your time wisely with the Internet. Don't make it forget from whom you are coming from.
