Extra Lives: Would it change reality?
by: Nursyazwanie Mohd Noor

"She watched in amazement as Glenn worked his magic on her avatar, blending his artistic grace and technical wizardry. As he was reshaping it, de-aging it and enhancing it, her eyes drank it all in. Before her eyes, through this technology, she was being created, Reborn"-(Bramlet, 2009)

Based on the quote in a book by Bramlet, it is about a woman, Angela who does not think she is not enough and lack of everything. Hence, she does not have any confidence in her to meet people and decided to ask for his friend's help by creating a new avatar in this online game name life 2.0. she felt alive being this 'new' person. Eventhough she got drinks from the guys in the bar as this avatar, she felt like she is worth of something. When the summer ends, she had to leave her avatar life. One day, in the bar, she saw a man and the approach is not the same as what she predicted. The man came to her and shortly after that, she was killed due to her inexperienced with people.

In this world, there is no such thing as 'the perfect moment' in terms of plan we are trying to keep, having a second life can fulfill this dream. We can be whoever we want just by the skills learned in the google search. Sometimes, escaping from the reality is the best way to keep our minds off from something. The question is, what is so wrong of having s second chance? To be the person we want to be. To be with the person we can love. To run from reality. To be reborn.

  1. Wanie, I totally agree with your statements. "To run from reality. To be reborn." Having a second life virtually offers the users a second chance to do something totally different from their original life, to change their made decisions. This is very interesting how humans are complex and seeking for new adventures. Perhaps it is an escape plan and a self-defense mechanism that could help with the psychological well-being of a Second Life user.

  2. For me, its not wrong having a second chance, its not wrong to be reborn. But, why do humans need second life if the first life is not even complete perfectly. To be reborn as what human want to be, its call desire. Complete your first life perfectly, than you dont even need the second life.

    1. Totally agree with Enna!! People should appreciate their live by creating memory with their loved ones. I believe that would be the best.

  3. I agree that most of us just want to run from the reality, to run from our problems. And that's why people have all sorts of distraction or coping mechanism for this. But let's not forget that we'll eventually get back to reality. There's no such thing as running from reality forever. You'll have to face the reality someday, whether you like it or not. I don't understand what's so great about this whole Second Life craze. Maybe because I rather prefer a real face-to-face human interaction. Perhaps not everyone is like me, that's why they forget the real world and get carried away in their newborn Second Life.

  4. personally i did try this game before, but now i stop already coz i forget my ID and password.. lol, anyway, this game is really fun and addicting, not because you want to run away from the reality but you want to know what happen next in your real life. most of the review said that they use this "second live" as their precaution in the reality. some people wouldn't dare to talk to other people face to face, so they use this game to help them to talk to someone even thou its not really make sense..

    1. Frankly speaking, I do not know this game before. But when you guys said this game is for peoples to run away from reality and know what happen next is just so absurd. That is because we cant run away from it. Its the same concept as when we woke up from our sleep, we hope that our problems will solve. No, it's not. We still need to ace it and find the solution. This game of "Second life" just make you forget who you are temporarily but it cannot change who you really are.

  5. As a normal person, sometimes I also want to run away from reality. Not to run away from the problem but to give myself time to think about the problem. Of course, the second life potentially work both ways, for good and for bad.

  6. Having a second life does not help in reality. To run away from the reality is just a moment. It does not help in reality. Run away from the problem, it might just help in relax for that moment. However, when come back to the reality, things still remain. First life does not change while having a second life.

    1. That is so true, first life does not change despite having a second life. Regardless of how ideal the second life looks to be, it is not real and we can't live all our lives in the virtual world.

  8. Hence, in conclusion, second life has their pros and cons as it can give people the second chance in life but at the same time it can make people forget how to face their own problem. so, it depends on how people want to handle their problems. It is not wrong running away from problem because sometimes it can be the best way.
