Cyborg Roaches Could Be Used to Find Disaster Survivors

By: Nursyazwanie Mohd Noor

Cyborg roaches are an advancement of technology used with the help of cockroaches to help the survivors in damaged nuclear power plants or collapsed mines. Attached on the cockroach is electrodes that stimulate the nerves in the insects' antennae, enabling the scientists to steer the creatures around like remote-controlled toys (Lewis, 2015). The founding of this new technology explains that cockroaches are the best animal to use in this experiment because it can go anywhere we guide them to. they were trained to follow the instruction by the electrodes nerve sent to them using a remote control.

This advancement also can get criticism by the "Animal Protection" because abusing cockroaches to do men's work. however, the founding of this technology claimed that they do not ask the cockroach to do heavy work or extreme abuse. For some credit, the founding also kept some of them in their office as his pet. He said that cockroach is not a disgusting animal but it is very useful for human being in the future.

For me, this is genius and gross at the same time. It is clever to use pest to find hidden survivor that is trapped but it might be different to the survivor that can got freaked out by the cockroaches that come to 'help' them. There might be chances that none of the cockroaches would be coming out alive. But for those who knew of this technology, they can really use this advantage. so, what do you guys think? does cockroaches can be our future superheroes?

  1. Hi Nursyazwanie Mohd Noor.

I have read through the article you posted and I am not quite a fan of this idea. What goes to your mind, to have faith in a cockroaches. It is far from being our savior, nor a superhero. Yes, I believe a man's work is best done by a man himself. If let say, anything happened, would any of us put the blame on the cockroaches? Then, will you? I doubt,it is wise thing to do.

There are so much ways to be considered, other than putting hope in the hand of a cockroaches. Wouldn't it be better if we used man's power instead. Sometimes, we just need to be old fashion, same goes here. In order to detect any survivors, officers were trained with some specific skills, which I believe, it would be so much helpful rather than any cockroaches could contribute to.

Well, it is just my humble opinion. So, if any of you, are not agreed with me, feel free to leave your comment down here. I am anticipating your fresh ideas. However, I am strongly against the idea of putting the faith in a cockroaches.

  2. Oh my God, Wanie. I hate cockroaches and any other six-legged creatures. Nevertheless, we have to admit that insects are really good at manoeuvring around rubbles and others. I once read that, cockroaches are so resilient as they've existed since the Dinosaur Era. It is actually very smart of the innovator to make good use of these features to strengthen the rescuing process of disaster victims. Well done! Keep it up!

    1. I understand some of us might think that cockroaches is disgusting but if you think again it is the only thing can help you when your life is on the line, don't you think cockroaches are not the problem anymore? And plus, It won't be having any wings to fly due to the position of the remote.

  3. In my opinion, human are started inhumanity. Cockroaches is just a small animals, however, it has been sacrifices for human need and innovation of the technology. It might be interesting if we try to innovated new technology, but it violating the cycle of the insect life. I totally disagree that people use animal to discover and innovate the new technology. Every animal has their live. They have their right to survive not contribute to human crazy idea.

  4. I think it is a good idea. Using cockroach is much more better for lab test instead of using other animal under protection of WWF.

  5. Hello everyone, regarding this issues right, I am actually quite disagree with the using of cockroaches to find the hidden survivors which are trapped. However, instead of using the live cockroaches, why do not they create and build a tiny robot who looks like a cockroaches. This is because in this era of technology, anything can be created. If they using a robot, the issues of abusing the insects would not come out. Therefore, I believe that a using of tiny robot is more appropriate than using the insects who have their own soul to live in this world.

  6. I do actually think that using cockroaches to save people is quite an ingenious idea. However, on a personal level, I am quite appalled by the notion as I think that these creatures are absolutely disgusting. Nonetheless, given the circumstances, I might react differently to it especially if my life is at stake. We humans can be very unpredictable when it comes to our survival. We can almost bear anything to keep ourselves alive. Rest assured, with life-threatening situations aside, I would certainly not hesitate to exterminate cockroaches when I see them. No offence to animal lovers.

  7. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!! OMG, I can't believe what I just read! Not being overboard here dear, but I don't think I'm looking forward to the idea of a disgusting piece of creature saving my life if ever I get stuck underground or whatnot *touch wood!*. Most importantly, I'm not a fan of cockroach! Other than that, if the scientists (and others) really think that a cockroach can save a potential life, by all means, proceed with it. And if ever I came across this hideous-looking roach trying to get any closer to me, I'll make sure my face is the last thing it sees!

Interesting article with a cringe-worthy information, though.

  8. Hi Nursyazwanie,

Based on the article, I think using cockroach to help the survivors in damaged nuclear power plants or collapsed mines is very interesting innovation. For me, this technology has pros and cons. Just imagine you are in situation between life and death under rubble, what your choice, dead or leave the cockroach to save your live. Well, it is just my opinion. If any of you are not agreed with me, feel free to know your comment here :)

  9. Hi guys, thank you for your responses. I do think having a second life is running from reality and I respect your opinion. Sometimes having to be someone else because you feel the suffocation and it is hard to breath being around with people, second life can provide us that. Besides that, people cannot be trusted in this era due to lots of crimes. By communicating through second life maybe it can bring happiness to people.
